The Early Childhood Instructor reports to the Early Childhood Program Manager and Early Childhood Program Coordinator and is responsible for planning, organizing, and implementing developmentally appropriate activities within early childhood programs to parents and children of newborns to age six.

Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
  1. Gain knowledge and understanding of Park District policies and procedures and see that they adhere to at all times.
  2. Provide a safe, nurturing and positive experience for all participants.
  3. Create positive relationships with participants and families.
  4. Create and implement daily curriculum activities that are age appropriate and designed for the needs and growth of each individual child. Submit lesson plans in a timely manner.
  5. Prepare materials for class projects and activities. Submit supply requests in a timely manner and within the budget requirements.
  6. Be aware of each child at all times and assume responsibility for all participants until released to a parent or designated caregiver.
  7. Lead and monitor classroom activities, anticipating potential problem situations and redirect activities to provide a safe and nurturing environment for all children in the program.
  8. Work in conjunction with the Early Childhood Program Manager and the Early Childhood Coordinator in making referrals and developing program plans for children with special needs.
  9. Work cooperatively with fellow teachers to support and obtain the goals and objectives of the program.
  10. Attend staff meetings, in-service trainings, and parent meetings as required.
  11. Ability to represent the Naperville Park District in a professional manner and follow the district’s customer service policies.
  12. Substitute as needed.

Other Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Maintain ongoing dialogue with parents and caregivers.
  • Ensure site is well supplied with necessary program materials.
  • Ensure that the classroom is left neat and clean after each use and that equipment is returned to its proper place.
  • Inform the Program Manager of student behavioral difficulties and concerns. Discuss strategies for improvement and monitor progress.
  • Evaluate the quality of the program on an ongoing basis, making recommendations for improvement to the Program Manager.
  • Observe and follow all Park District safety policies and regulations, and report any hazardous situations. Record and keep incident/accident reports with a copy to the Program Manager.
  • Attend various district-wide and departmental staff trainings as they pertain to policies and procedures, safety or other subjects as appropriate.
  • Implement Park District Customer service standards.
  • Distribute written communication as necessary or requested by the organization.

Education and Experience:

  • A high school diploma, a B.S., B.A., or A.A. degree in Early Childhood or Elementary Education preferred.
  • At least one-year early childhood or child care experience.
  • Must have an understanding of child development.

Special Considerations:

  • Maintain and/or obtain current certifications in CPR and First Aid within 3 months of hire.
  • Requires flexibility of work schedule during high volume work periods.
  • Work is subject to inside/outside environmental conditions
  • Requires regular lifting of light - medium - heavy objects weighing up to 40 pounds.
